South Sudan
ITMI’s Lazarus Yezinai has found that sports are an effective way to reach at-risk youth who have joined gangs in Juba, South Sudan.
He operates six soccer clubs or teams in six different areas of the city. Each team has practices and regular Bible studies, as well as participating in program-wide events where God’s Word and the Good News is shared. Many of these youth live on the street.
Some were separated from their families during a tribal conflict, others voluntarily left bad home situations, others were orphaned. But for whatever reason, they have joined a gang to survive on the streets.
They are overlooked and marginalized in the communities where they operate, and they are deeply grateful to have relationships with Lazarus and other program leaders - grateful for someone to teach them about life, advise and care about them.
These communities are also getting to see God’s people and His love in action among them as they notice positive changes in the lives of youth who once roamed the streets with violence and pain in their hearts.
