A Letter from Steve in Uganda: How I Shocked My Fellow Taxi Riders
It seems like someone who had “seen absolutely everything” as a daily taxi conductor, absolutely didn’t know what to do. He had probably never seen this done before – especially from a “white” stranger. The other passengers watched the “white guy” anyway, but now they turned their eyes to my exchange with the conductor with intensity and interest.
He Comes to Make His Blessings Flow
I would ask my mother, “Why are you drinking?” Her answer, “I drink so that I can forget what I have gone through all the years was a slave.”
Why a School for Training Pastors is Reaching Kids
Five children marched around a wooden poll, their hands forming make-shift horns on their mouths. About 55 other children watched the 5 in front of them. After completing 7 times around the poll, the 5 children ran out the door. Laughing, they collapsed into the grass as the spectators laughed gleefully with them.
Why Do We Do What We Do?
This article first appeared in the March 2015 edition of ITMI Monthly. Why do we feed the poor? They stink. Why do we care for widows and orphans? They have diseases and miseries of every kind. Saved from Mob Justice
There is a popular song in East Africa that teaches the community that a witchdoctor and a liar deserve to be set on fire. This happened to Mr. Buyongwe (Buy-yong-wee) John, an 80-year-old man who was a well-known witchdoctor, who lived in the Cankozo District in the Republic of Burundi. The people of Cankozo were fed up with the witchcraft practices of Mr. Buyongwe. This led to poverty because many people paid all their money to him to solve their problems. One day the community decided to (punish) his witchcraft lies by setting him on fire.
More Powerful Than Dark Spirits
When ITMI’s Muhindo Kawede was a boy, his mother told him to behave or else the ghosts of his ancestors would get him. Instead of using “monster spray” to calm children’s fears of imaginary goblins hiding under the bed, as in America, Kawede’s mother told him and his siblings their ancestors would eat them. And she meant every word.
Home Alone in a Refugee Camp
Jahim just wasn’t Jahim. Last month ITMI’s Steve Evers sat out under a Ugandan shade tree, seeking some refuge from the intense equatorial sun, while at a small guest house in Kampala, Uganda. Jahim was really glad to see Steve, and he was wanting to discuss what opportunities there were in South Sudan, but Jahim wasn’t Jahim. With what Jahim was exposed to in December in his homeland of South Sudan…

“It was in the year 2000 that I was convicted by the Holy Spirit, and I heard that the day of Judgment was coming. This led me to repent of my sins, and I trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ. I immediately started a church in Kampala, Uganda but because I was untrained, I failed to teach and disciple my members.”
